Auckland, New Zealand – NZ weather is set to cool in Sydney with some parts of the South Island expected to be blanketed by snow in the coming days.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued snowfall warnings for parts of South Island, including parts of Otago and the South Coast.
“I’m expecting a little bit of a mix of rain and a little drizzle,” meteorologist Tim Kelleher said.
“The chance of it snowing at the moment is about 40 per cent but we will see more if it does snow.
The colder the conditions, the more likely it is for it to snow.”
But if you’re going into the city then that’s probably where the risk is highest.
“Snow and rain is forecast to occur throughout much of New Zealand over the next two days.
Temperatures are expected to fall to the lower 30s to 40 degrees, which is expected to make for some of the snowiest conditions.
Auckland City Council said a snow warning will be issued on Wednesday morning and the city is expecting about 25 centimetres of snowfall.
Kelleher expects that number to increase as temperatures increase and there will be snow showers in the afternoon.”
We’re expecting maybe two to three inches of snow,” he said.
Rain is forecast throughout the South Pacific and eastern North Pacific, with areas in the south of South Africa expected to see more snow.
Kellehter expects the rain to be more of a mixed snow and rain with more rain in the region.
Forecasters have predicted rain in some areas of South Australia for Wednesday morning.
While the forecast has not yet been officially declared a winter storm, there are fears it could become one.
An extreme weather warning has been issued for parts in South Australia, with the warning for the central parts of parts of Victoria and New South Wales, with heavy rain possible across Victoria and parts of NSW.
The bureau has warned of the risk of flash flooding in some parts.
Auckland has a high incidence of winter storm activity, with an average of 30 centimetre of snowfalls occurring each year.
It is forecast that a winter-related storm could impact parts of New South Australia and the Northern Territory over the weekend.
Snow is forecast for parts on the Western Coast of New England and parts in the Northern Rivers.
